Bhutan

Country Information

Druk-Yul is situated in the Himalayan mountains and has three main climatic regions. The southern Duar plain is humid and tropical, in the northern peaks there is permanent snow cover, and the central area is temperate. Around half the cultivated land is on steep slopes and susceptible to erosion and frequent landslides during the rainy season. Small scale agriculture is the main livelihood option. Some hydropower energy is exported. Glacial melting as a result of climate change is causing occasional glacial lake outburst flooding (GLOF).
