Bangladesh

Country Information

Grana Prajatantri Bangladesh is a tropical country situated on deltas of large rivers that flow from the Himalayas: the Ganges unites with the Jamuna (main channel of the Brahmaputra) and later joins the Meghna to eventually empty into the Bay of Bengal. The country is mainly flat alluvial plain, with hills in the southeast. Bangladesh experiences mild winters (October to March), hot, humid summers (March to June) and a humid, warm rainy monsoon (June to October). Population density is extremely high and many people are landless and live on and cultivate flood-prone land. Water-borne diseases are prevalent in surface water and there are intermittent water shortages because of falling water tables in the northern and central parts of the country. Other problems include deforestation, soil degradation and erosion. The current thematic focus of NCAP is adaptation in relation to agriculture and fisheries.
